An Overview of Adult Training
In Scouting all adult volunteers have an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through training which helps you to undertake your role effectively and with confidence. Adult Training is designed to support you as a volunteer, so the training provided is relevant and tailored to your role. We recognise there may be learning and skills you have gained through your life experiences, and training is designed to complement these with further opportunities to enhance your individual skills. Training is accessible to all, regardless of geography, education, personal circumstances, or special needs and will also provide you with the opportunities to interact and share experiences with other volunteers. Training encourages personal development in a variety of practical skills that are valued by employers in the workplace. The opportunities available are dependent on your role but they range from skillsbased training such as first aid, risk assessment, safeguarding and public relations through to experience in leadership, management, communication, organisation, child protection, executive training, and experience of working with young people.
How it works
Scouting's Adult Training Scheme is made up of modules that cover each of these different development areas. It is a UK-wide scheme, so the training you complete in one place will be recognised in another. There are two parts to each of these modules, learning and validation.
Learning
Learning provides the opportunity to gain or improve the knowledge and skills which you need to develop for your role. The methods used for learning can involve more traditional styles, such as learning by doing and small group work, but these are complimented by methods such as courses, workbooks, videos, and elearning. This offers flexibility as you can choose the method most suited to you. Prior learning, knowledge and experience are also recognised as forms of learning and are valued within the Adult Training Scheme. Therefor you may not need to complete learning for every aspect of your training. This is especially so if you can clearly show that you are able to meet the module aims by showing your skills in your Scouting role through the validation process.
Validation
Validation is the process of proving to your Training Adviser (TA) that you can meet the aims of a module in practice. This can be done through a variety of methods, including your TA seeing you in your Scouting role, providing evidence such as witness statements or discussing the key content of the module with your TA. Some e-learning modules are validated automatically through the completion of an assessment of understanding at the end of the module. Successful Validation is essential for each module relevant to your role and should always be something that you do as part of your normal Scouting role and should not generate extra work.
Getting Started
Initially you will need to complete 'Getting Started' training, within 5 months of starting your role.
The following modules are required depending on your role.

Alternatively, this can be completed as a self-assessment using our Module 2 PLP e-form followed up with support from a TA or the TA Team as necessary.
Wood Badge Training
Completing your PLP
Training should be completed and validated within 3 years of starting your role.
Once you have completed Getting started training you will need to continue working towards completing your PLP and achieving your Wood Badge. Your TA should cover this when formulating your PLP, but further info can be found in the Adult Personal File (see below) or at... https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/46...
